The information that can be found on Native American is extensive, with the best information being buried in history books, scholarly papers, and autobiographies. Here are resources I found very informative. Some were pleasurable to read and look at, while others were difficult and complicated.

 

Good Reads

I had to stop about 50 pages in to take a breather and thank god for these men.

Definitely a book that will impact you

Great history and well researched details about specific battles and negotiations that took place between the tribes and the US during the transformative time of the Indian Wars

Definitely sheds light on the day in the life of a Warrior or soldier in the 1800s

This book was made famous by Joe Rogan. It’s a good read, however I don’t think it’s the best resource for learning about the actual customs and culture of the Comanche.

Great book and story for understanding the second half of the Indian wars.

This book was written to share Native perspective of ultimately losing the Indian wars and experiencing the destruction of one way of life and integration of another

Lots of people cry when reading this book

One of the best resources for understanding the Lakota way of life and the history of the Lakota from Oral tradition.

Phenomenal book for understanding Plains People and customs

Great resource for learning about Native American hunting and warfare

Great book with lots of research done on Native American hunting, warfare, and the practice of taking trophies such as the practice of scalping

not for the faint of heart

Extensive book covering Native American History in depth from before European contact to the 1990’s

Coffee Table Books w/ great imagery

Beautiful book with amazing imagery of the Native American “clothing“ , attire and regalia.

Nat Geo did a good job in combing solid research with great imagery.

The Indian wars was a pivotal time in US and Native American History. Leaders such Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, & Geronimo were made famous or infamous during this time

A wonderful resource that captures Native Americans as a whole in well crafted and visual way
